Game Science, the studio behind Black Myth: Wukong, has once again clarified that the challenges in optimizing the game for the Xbox Series S are the cause of what appears to be unintended exclusivity on the PS5. Despite persistent stories from major media outlets suggesting that Sony might have secretly snagged an exclusive deal for Black Myth: Wukong, these claims don’t hold much water. This rumor seems to have gained traction, perhaps due to ambiguous comments from Microsoft, but as we’ve noted before, the reports are baseless.
Feng Ji, the director of Black Myth: Wukong, took to the Chinese social media platform Weibo, as reported by ResetEra, to express his thoughts on the game’s recent success at the Steam Awards, where it took home the prestigious Game of the Year 2024 award. While celebrating this milestone, Feng Ji voiced his regret over the absence of a version for Xbox.
Referring to the Xbox Series S, Feng Ji mentioned, “It seems a bit wrong but that 10GB shared memory, without a few years of optimization experience…” which hints at the technical hurdles they’ve encountered.
On the flip side, Microsoft has publicly stated that they are unaware of any optimization issues specifically related to Black Myth: Wukong on the Series S. A company spokesperson told Forbes, “We’d prefer not to comment on the deals made by our partners with other platform holders, but we can confirm that the delay is not due to Xbox platform limitations that have been raised to us.”
So, with this clarification, it’s safe to say that the rumor has been put to rest.
