ININ Games, Tozai Games, and Ratalaika Games have teamed up to present Irem Collection Volume 2, a fantastic array of classic games now available on the Nintendo Switch. Join me as I dive into our review of this enticing retro compilation!
This new volume brings a selection of games that will appeal to nostalgic gamers and newcomers alike. Having reviewed the Irem Collection Volume 1 last year, which included titles like Image Fight, Image Fight II, and X-Multiply, I was eager to explore what Volume 2 has to offer. This time, we’re treated to the intense action of GunForce, its sequel GunForce II, and the shoot ’em up classic Air Duel.
The collection offers two modes: Casual and Classic. Casual Mode provides some great features like the ability to rewind gameplay, input cheat codes such as invincibility and infinite lives, and utilize save states to pick up where you left off. There’s even an autofire option to keep enemies at bay with ease. Meanwhile, Classic Mode sticks closely to the original experience, letting you enjoy the challenge as it was meant to be played, with the added ability to upload your scores to the online leaderboard.
Originally hitting arcades in 1991, GunForce drops you into a simpler time with a single mission: shoot everything in sight to defeat the big bad threatening Earth. It later found its way onto the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1992, albeit with some concessions like occasional slowdown and sprite flicker. For this collection, both the arcade and SNES versions are included, allowing a comprehensive experience of this classic.
Controlling the protagonist is straightforward. Utilize the left analog stick or D-Pad to maneuver, with the A button used for shooting. Autoshooting is mapped to the Y button, while jumping is handled with B. Should you need to rectify a mistake, simply rewind the action using the L button. Holding down the + button opens the menu, where you can save or load your progress. Power-ups are plentiful, ranging from power ammo to a machine gun, laser, or flamethrower.
Fast forward to 1994, and you have GunForce II, another arcade release continuing the run ‘n’ gun legacy. Like its predecessor, it kicks up the action several notches, introducing dual-wielding guns and more dynamic aiming mechanics. The controls mirror those of GunForce, including the same variety of power-ups, but add an extra layer of depth to the gameplay.
You’re tasked with stopping D.A.S. with protagonists Max and Lei. The gameplay, coupled with rescuing prisoners—reminiscent of the beloved Metal Slug series—underscores its influence on that iconic franchise. Notably, GunForce II holds the distinction of being Irem’s final arcade release, marking the end of an era.
Lastly, there’s Air Duel, a 1990 shoot ’em up set in the same world as GunForce II. The controls are intuitive, focusing on delivering action-packed gameplay. Piloting your craft with the left analog stick or D-Pad, the A button fires your weapons while the B button releases powerful bombs. Opting for the jet or chopper allows different strategies, with varied attack patterns tailored to each.
You can enhance your experience by rotating the screen to mimic the vertical display of classic arcade cabinets. If you have a Flip Grip accessory, it’s the perfect time to put it to use, transforming your Switch display to capture that authentic arcade feel.
All in all, Irem Collection Volume 2 offers a stellar lineup on the Nintendo Switch. With GunForce and its sequel, alongside Air Duel, you’re getting a robust trio of thrill-packed retro games. Priced at $24.99, it’s a delightful addition for any fan of classic gaming fare.
