Dynasty Warriors Origins has long been a staple in the PlayStation universe, serving fans on every Sony console from the PS1 to the PSVita. However, since Dynasty Warriors 9 graced the PS4 in 2018, the main series had been off the radar. Now, Omega Force Studios is back, taking inspiration from the dramatic and tumultuous Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history. Recently, I had the chance to delve into the next chapter of this iconic series, set for a January 2025 release: Dynasty Warriors Origins.
One of the first things to grab my attention was the refreshing departure from the traditional numbered titles. During a preview event, I had the opportunity to chat with Tomohiko Sho, the Origins Producer and Omega Force Studio Head. He explained the thought process behind this change:
“One driving factor was to simplify access for newcomers—seeing a big ’10’ could be intimidating. Origins provides a more welcoming introduction,” he shared. “Also, we wanted to focus on the tactical action that the series initially prided itself on, rather than purely action-centric gameplay seen in more recent titles.”
Listening to Sho speak, you can’t help but feel his enthusiasm for Dynasty Warriors Origins. I asked him about the influence of modern hits like Ghost Of Tsushima on their creative process. Here’s what he said:
“I adore Ghost Of Tsushima. The initial battle scene felt incredibly realistic and immersive, setting a standard we aspired to reach: creating an authentic battlefield experience,” he mused. “While we’ve always depicted vast armies, capturing the immersive sensation of being right there in the thick of battle, that’s something we aimed to achieve now.”
As soon as you start playing the game, you notice a distinct shift from prior releases. While it retains the essential “Dynasty Warriors” vibe in terms of visuals and sound, there’s an unmistakable cinematic and emotional depth from the outset. This dovetails perfectly with Sho’s insights—it’s about capturing the feel, depth, and gravitas of battle, beyond just swinging a sword.
The gameplay mechanics and system designs are crafted to reinforce the storytelling. As you advance your hero’s abilities and refine your weaponry to suit your play style, you feel genuinely invested. These well-crafted progression systems allow you to tailor your character to your liking. The focus is on your chosen hero and the allies who fight alongside you.
The power of the PS5 allows battles to unfold across several fronts, not just where you’re unleashing your own attack strategies. You need to be attentive and offer support as needed, a crucial element for success.
Another exciting feature is the ability to direct and even assume control of other characters in your battalion. The morale system adds another layer, where your decisions and strategies can sway the tide of battle, enhancing the importance of your comrades’ spirit.
Contrasting with the adrenaline-pumping battles, there are serene elements that offer a refreshing change of pace. The world map, representing The Three Kingdoms era, features a distinct aesthetic and soundtrack, providing a stark contrast to the battlefield chaos.
As the story progresses, this map opens up more exploration opportunities, revealing side missions, meetings with characters, and items for upgrades, all accompanied by soothing traditional Chinese music.
Visually captivating storytelling is presented through beautifully designed, partially animated art pieces. They provide a distinct twist on the “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” lore, differentiating them from the in-game cutscenes. Both long-time fans and newcomers will find these elements impressive.
With an engaging gameplay loop and strong narrative, Dynasty Warriors Origins is shaping up as a standout entry in the series. My brief play session left me eager for more, reluctant to set the controller down. Though the full release arrives on January 17, 2025, players can dive into a demo now to experience a slice of the adventure ahead.
Anticipate Dynasty Warriors Origins on January 17, 2025, available on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
