Stress Level Zero has hit a home run with their physics-based sandbox, BONELAB (2022), making quite the splash on the Quest platform. However, there’s been a bit of anticipation in the air, as fans have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of their earlier hit, BONEWORKS (2019), on Meta’s latest standalone devices. Well, it looks like that wait is almost over.
If you haven’t experienced it on a PC VR headset, Boneworks offers an intense narrative-driven VR action-adventure. It throws you into a world where advanced experimental physics are at the core. You’ll find yourself navigating dynamic environments, taking part in combat that’s heavy on the physics, and solving puzzles in imaginative ways.
Brandon Laatsch, one of the studio’s co-founders, recently shared some exciting plans for 2025 through a post on X (formerly known as Twitter). He mentioned that their team is focusing on several goals, including working on updates for their Marrow Engine physics framework in Unity. Plus, they’re gearing up to release Boneworks on Quest 3 and Quest 3S.
Dive into what Boneworks looks like on Quest 3:
On X, Laatsch detailed their focus for ’25: “Patch 7, 8, 9 for Bonelab with Marrow 2, 2.1, 2.2. Bringing Boneworks to Quest 3 alongside Marrow 2. We’re also kicking off pre-production for our next title. By crossing links with Marrow, we’re aiming for seamless compatibility. Boneworks might be close kin, but it’s still a challenge. Best of luck, SLZ!”
Laatsch noted that both the development of Marrow’s 2.0 version and Boneworks for Quest 3 are happening simultaneously, along with early stages for their next game project.
Here’s something interesting: Quest users already have a way to enjoy Boneworks on Quest 2 and newer setups, thanks to a fan-driven project called ‘Labworks.’ This mod, created over two years by indie modder ‘volx64,’ has made it possible.
Laatsch assured fans that they’re not planning to take down Labworks. In defending the forthcoming Quest 3 version, he pointed out that the Marrow Engine upgrade “will bring more change to [Boneworks] than just a simple port.”
While there’s no specific release date yet, we’re eagerly watching both Laatsch’s X account and the studio’s YouTube channel for any updates on their progress. Stay tuned!
