A curious Helldivers 2 dataminer has stumbled upon an unexpected discovery—a peculiar, potentially lethal light show set off by an Illuminate obelisk. Now, they are caught in the tricky dance of trying to figure out how to trigger it again.
These foes from the Omens of Tyranny update, the ones you’ve been bravely battling, might just have a secret weapon up their sleeves. Imagine an orbital laser strike hidden away for special occasions. Whether this ever materializes in the game remains a mystery at this point.
Known for his leaks, including the early reveal of the game’s Killzone crossover gear, dataminer Iron_S1ghts describes this find as not quite a full leak, but rather as something related to the Illuminate Obelisk.
Have a look at the shared clip below, where you’ll see an elaborate and striking light display dancing across a planet’s surface. It’s not merely a visual treat to enjoy while toasting marshmallows mid-mission. Iron_S1ghts claims these beams pack a punch, dealing 1300 damage on contact.
Interestingly, the music in the video isn’t part of the feature. As clarified by Iron_S1ghts, the tunes were just part of a playlist accidentally included in the clip. It’s a shame, though, as it would have been cool if the Illuminate Aurora had its own soundtrack.
“This discovery was purely accidental,” Iron_S1ghts explained. “I was testing the Obelisk projectile by dropping it from the sky, and it just happened during the process. There’s no telling what this will do once it’s part of the game, but it looked incredible. Surprisingly, the performance impact wasn’t too heavy.”
Yet, it seems we won’t be seeing more of this phenomenon anytime soon. The dataminer has struggled to replicate the exact conditions that activated it initially, saying, “I would’ve captured better footage, but I can’t recreate the effect.”
Currently, neither the dataminer nor anyone else knows exactly what this unexpected discovery entails. Until we have further information, it’s best to take this with a grain of salt. As Arrowhead pointed out, not all leaks and data mining discoveries are destined to become realities in Helldivers 2.
If nothing else, this gives us something to speculate about, especially if you’re already tired of brainstorming fantasy casts for the rumored Helldivers movie.
