Back in 2021, Polygon was the first to introduce Auroboros: Coils of the Serpent, a fascinating creation that takes its roots from Metzen’s basement adventures in the 1980s. What really stands out in this setting is how bards take center stage, even enjoying their own festival reminiscent of Burning Man. However, what truly sets the game apart is its intriguing magic system, all based on mystical tattoos.
When I spoke to Metzen, he described the Auroboros as a “primordial force of creation.” He explained, “The more you harness it, the deeper you delve into powers that go beyond your basic class abilities. But beware—it brings along chaos and destruction, reminiscent of the wild, self-destructive path of a rock legend like Jim Morrison.”
Although it seems like Warchief Gaming, Metzen’s company, might have hit pause on some fronts—considering their website is down (we’ve reached out to get more clarity)—you can still find the initial releases of Auroboros available on Amazon. If this piques your curiosity, you should definitely check out Auroboros: Coils of the Serpent – Worldbook: Lawbrand. It’s a comprehensive guide that lays everything out for you. Plus, there’s a novel titled Auroboros: Under the Sun, with Metzen himself lending his voice as one of the storytellers.
