Metanaut, the creative minds behind the intriguing Gadgeteer (2019) inspired by Rube Goldberg’s inventive machines, are back with something new and exciting. They’re rolling out an anthology of virtual and mixed reality experiences designed to captivate and enthrall.
The new offering is called Wonder, and Metanaut is planning to release it on Quest 3/S in just a few short months. They promise it to be the perfect opportunity to unwind and temporarily escape the chaos of everyday life.
First talked about at the end of 2021, Wonder is gearing up to introduce three unique experiences when it makes its debut this spring, with more on the horizon afterward:
-
Ancient Ruins: Watch as the space around you transforms into an intriguing cave, only to be devoured by a mysterious black hole.
-
Jellyfish Bloom: Dive into the depths of the ocean where dazzling bioluminescent jellyfish illuminate your surroundings, casting a glow over walls and furniture.
- Parallel Worlds: Explore the concept of reality-bending portals that open up alternate versions of your environment, displaying them in ice, dots, and other intriguing forms.
Metanaut boasts that Wonder takes advantage of "clever and advanced rendering techniques" to push the Quest 3 to its limits, delivering stunningly realistic visuals by incorporating scanned room meshes. Plus, you won’t have to fuss with controllers since it’s all about hand tracking.
To complement these visuals, there’s an exquisite audio component, thanks to the award-winning Ictus Audio. This music studio, notable for accolades like the John Lennon Songwriting Award, crafted the soundtrack to enhance the experience.
Reflecting on the industry’s current landscape, Metanaut’s founder, Peter Kao, commented, "The XR space has shifted focus from adults to kids, and premium quality has been overshadowed by free-to-play offerings." With Wonder, they aim to fill the gap by crafting an enchanting experience for an underserved audience—those who appreciate high-quality audiovisual experiences on cutting-edge headsets.
Wonder is now available for pre-order at $4, with the price set to rise as additional content is rolled out post-launch. If you’re interested in this captivating journey, you can pre-order exclusively for Quest 3 and Quest 3S right away.
