Ubisoft, the renowned French publishing company, appears to be jumping into the battle royale arena with a new game aimed at challenging the success of Apex Legends.
Rumor has it, according to Insider Gaming, that Ubisoft’s latest project—currently going by the code name “Scout”—bears a striking resemblance to EA and Respawn’s popular title. It seems that some of the artwork for Scout was even reminiscent enough of Apex Legends to have been used as a placeholder thumbnail. Moreover, whispers of character similarities between the two games have been circulating, fueling speculation about just how closely this newcomer might align with Apex Legends.
Word on the street is that Ubisoft envisions luring players from Apex Legends, a game whose player engagement and revenue have reportedly dipped, according to its publisher, Electronic Arts. “The idea,” shared a source familiar with the matter, “seems to be that they want to tap into the existing audience of Apex, thinking there’s opportunity in the market for another hero-centric Battle Royale game.”
Ubisoft isn’t exactly a novice when it comes to venturing into the free-to-play battle royale genre. Back in 2020, they launched Hyperscape, although that game was ultimately short-lived, lasting only 18 months. More recently, the company decided to pull the plug on their free-to-play shooter XDefiant by the end of 2024, so this new project comes at a time of significant shifts for Ubisoft.
Meanwhile, fans of Apex Legends should know there is a revamped version, Apex Legends 2.0, scheduled to roll out sometime after April 2026, which is sure to keep the competition heated.
