Imagine diving into an MMO where time bends to your will. That’s the vision behind the new RPG, Erenshor. It draws inspiration from the classic charm of Old School Runescape and the immersive world of World of Warcraft, yet it turns the whole concept on its head. While it appears like your typical MMORPG, bustling with players engaged in quests and battles, the twist is that these aren’t actual people. In fact, Erenshor is a single-player experience designed to rekindle the joy of ’90s MMOs and it’s now available.
As a gamer who has dedicated countless hours to Final Fantasy 14, I was immediately intrigued by Erenshor. At first glance, it resembles OSRS with its expansive open world, dungeons, and player-like activity, yet it’s a game of a different kind. Instead of being populated by real players, you’re accompanied by what developer Burgee Media calls ‘Simplayers.’ These NPCs operate autonomously, existing persistently in the game world and teaming up with you just like MMO players would – except they’re not human.
In Erenshor, you’ll hunt down beasts, embark on quests, and amass wealth just as you would in games like WoW or Guild Wars. However, here, the goal isn’t the endless grind. It’s about crafting your character the same way you would in a single-player RPG.
From the moment you start up Erenshor and embark on the tutorial — a staple of any MMO journey — the ‘server’ comes to life. The NPCs advance alongside you, striving for progress just like any player. If you come across equipment that doesn’t suit you, you can pass it on to these NPCs, enhancing their abilities. When tackling tough raids or dungeons, you can enlist these friends, decked out in the gear you’ve shared with them.
Being part of an MMO world often means sidestepping the grand quest to focus on your personal journey. Erenshor fully embraces this freedom. Whether you wish to wander, delve into the game’s lore, or simply hunt for treasures, you’re free to do so. Burgee Media aims to let you experience the nostalgia of a classic MMO without the hefty time investment.
Erenshor is now available on Steam Early Access, with a demo for those curious to explore this unique MMO experience. You can jump in right here.
