In the foggy realm, the power of a Ghoul is both terrifying and awe-inspiring. These creatures possess the uncanny ability to move with lightning speed, tearing through flesh with an insatiable hunger. Their attacks are swift and damaging, leaving both physical and emotional scars.
Many would argue that Ghouls are the ultimate predators, especially when they fully embrace their sinister instincts. Ken Kaneki found himself in this dark transformation after enduring unspeakable torture at the hands of a menacing Ghoul named Jason. Driven by primal urges, Kaneki’s powers awakened, leading him to a mysterious black Fog…
Now, let’s explore what happens when Ken Kaneki enters the world of Dead by Daylight. In this cycle of endless trials, The Ghoul emerges as a terrifying figure, wearing a mask and embodying the cruelty of his own tormentor. Survivors who cross his path will face the formidable power of the Kagune, brought to life by Dead by Daylight’s Principal Game Designer, Janick Neveu, and his talented team.
According to Neveu, it was crucial to maintain Kaneki’s essence from the series, especially his iconic tentacles. “They are central to who he is, so naturally, they became the foundation of his Power,” Neveu explains. The team recognized the potential for mobility these tentacles offered, immediately drawing players in. “High-mobility Killers are highly sought after, so we were very mindful of balancing the gameplay to be fresh, enjoyable, and fair for all players,” Neveu continues.
Despite the allure of creating a high-mobility Killer, the design team aimed to make The Ghoul accessible to newcomers. They wanted fans of the series stepping into Dead by Daylight for the first time to have a familiar, yet thrilling experience. “He’s easy to learn but tough to master,” says Neveu. “While recent Chapters have introduced complex Killers with steep learning curves, The Ghoul is designed to be a more approachable option. Nevertheless, there’s plenty of depth for experienced players to explore.”
Kaneki’s Enraged Mode adds another layer to his gameplay. “While enraged, his tentacles become immensely powerful,” Neveu notes. “Landing a hit with the final lunge delivers a Deep Wound, triggering Enraged Mode. This allows for an extra swift lunge, and if you hit a Survivor, your subsequent Vault is even faster. This strategic element injects exhilarating tension into The Ghoul’s playstyle.”
The Ghoul comes equipped with a versatile set of powers and three unique Perks: Hex: Nothing But Misery, Forever Entwined, and None Are Free, each encouraging players to apply consistent pressure. It’s as if Ken Kaneki can be in multiple places at once.
