In the world of gaming, Baldur’s Gate 3 has made a monumental splash, leaving both casual gamers and die-hard fans eagerly awaiting word of a follow-up. While a sequel of similar caliber might not be on the horizon just yet, keeping an eye out for updates on such a prospect might still be worthwhile.
Before Baldur’s Gate 3, the series had expanded through various sequels and expansions, though many fans recognize Baldur’s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn as the true second entry, placing Baldur’s Gate 3 as the third installment. Shadows of Amn hit the gaming scene back in 2000, meaning there was a hefty 23-year gap between it and its successor. Even though Baldur’s Gate: Siege of Dragonspear arrived in 2016, bridging that gap slightly to a still significant seven years, it’s understandable if fans aren’t holding their breath for a new game to drop anytime soon. However, Hasbro might have something up their sleeve that could change that outlook.
Hasbro has been dropping subtle hints regarding the future of the franchise, though these don’t necessarily point to a forthcoming Baldur’s Gate 4. With Larian Studios, the team behind the triumph of Baldur’s Gate 3, stepping away from the series, there’s a flurry of curiosity about which developer will partner with Hasbro next.
Thankfully, it appears there’s no shortage of parties interested in taking on the project. During a chat with IGN at the 2025 Game Developer’s Conference, Dan Ayoub, Hasbro’s SVP of digital games, revealed widespread interest in Baldur’s Gate. According to Ayoub, “a lot of people” are keen on the franchise, and Hasbro already has plans afoot for its future. Although he didn’t spill all the beans, Ayoub did suggest that there could be announcements in the relatively near future, hinting that Baldur’s Gate isn’t collecting dust on a shelf.
Though the roadmaps discussed by Ayoub didn’t include Baldur’s Gate 4 just yet, he didn’t shy away from expressing both his and Hasbro’s eagerness to see that sequel materialize. It looks like they’re playing the long game, intending to ensure the sequel lives up to expectations. Ayoub stated that while they’re keeping details close to the chest for now, there’s “a lot of plans” for Baldur’s Gate.
The developer taking on the next installment not only faces the challenge of improving upon the gameplay and mechanics of Baldur’s Gate 3 but also maintaining a cohesive storyline that honors its predecessors. Although many studios would love the chance to rise to this challenge, matching the richness of Larian’s contribution is no small feat. Fans should maintain their enthusiasm for Baldur’s Gate 4 and stay tuned for what Hasbro has coming down the line, even though it might be a while before we see the next chapter grace our screens.
