Microsoft is gearing up to enhance Task Manager in the latest Windows 11 update by introducing a fresh approach to calculating CPU usage, closely aligning with functionalities offered by many third-party applications.
The update represents a significant shift, as Microsoft evidently recognizes that the current performance metrics in Task Manager can’t quite compete with those of third-party tools. In response, they’re rolling out a new way of computing CPU utilization, bringing Task Manager’s capabilities in line with these external tools. This change is set to elevate Task Manager’s effectiveness significantly.
“We are beginning to roll out a change to the way Task Manager calculates CPU utilization for the Processes, Performance, and Users pages. Task Manager will now use the standard metrics to display CPU workload consistently across all pages and align with industry standards and third-party tools,” Microsoft announced.
Although it’s still a bit murky how this update will redefine CPU utilization calculations, we know they will now be unified across the Processes, Performance, and Users pages. This consistency should ensure that the figures presented by Task Manager match up with those from third-party platforms, sparing users from inconsistent data and advocating for native CPU monitoring solutions. Previously reliant on third-party tools like HWINFO, users might find they can count on Task Manager again. Yet, we’ll need to wait for the update’s official release to see these changes in action.
Additionally, for those who are comfortable with the current calculation method, Microsoft isn’t leaving anyone behind. They’ve added a new optional column named CPU Utility in the “Details” tab, allowing users to revert if needed. Currently, these updates are part of the Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26120.3360, aligning with the 24H2 update. This gradual rollout signifies Microsoft’s commitment to enhancing consumer experiences, ensuring everyone benefits from improved, consistent CPU monitoring.
