Last year brought exciting news for fans of Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) when Wizards of the Coast teamed up with Resolution Games to announce a new virtual reality adaptation of the beloved tabletop RPG.
Up to this point, both companies have been pretty secretive about the details. But that changed on Wednesday when they finally pulled back the curtain, revealing the official title and more information to bring players closer to stepping into a VR D&D realm.
This highly anticipated game, known as Battlemarked, draws from the Demeo system crafted by Resolution Games. It’s all about creating a virtual tabletop setting with gameplay that mirrors D&D, focusing on turn-based combat. Demeo uses an action point system that relies on playing cards to keep the game engaging.
Battlemarked marks the first collaboration between Resolution Games and Wizards of the Coast, so expectations are high for it to deliver a true D&D vibe. One big difference, though, is that it doesn’t require a Dungeon Master. The idea is to let players focus on strategy and decision-making, rather than purely roleplaying.
When it launches, Battlemarked will introduce two campaigns driven by rich storytelling, and up to four players can dive into these adventures together.
The game is set to roll out across multiple platforms, including VR, PC, and consoles. While they haven’t confirmed exactly which devices will support it, Demeo currently works on Meta Quest, Pico, SteamVR, PlayStation VR2, PlayStation 5, PC, Mac, and iPad. It’s likely Battlemarked will be available on these same platforms.
With the announcement, they also dropped a fresh trailer showcasing the signature art style we’ve come to expect from Wizards of the Coast. Players can look forward to seeing familiar classes and races, like a Dragonborn fighter and a Tiefling rogue, among others.
Despite the excitement, many aspects of the new title remain shrouded in mystery, including its release date and pricing. The specifics of the campaigns haven’t been disclosed yet either. Resolution Games did hint at more campaigns in the pipeline, set in various D&D settings. However, they’ve been tight-lipped about further details.
Resolution Games, founded a decade ago and based in Stockholm, Sweden, has an impressive portfolio, including games like Angry Birds: Isle of Pigs, Cook-Out: A Sandwich Tale, and Spatial Ops. According to PitchBook, the studio has secured about $38.6 million in funding.
Today’s reveal is another sign of D&D’s increasing mainstream appeal. The franchise has expanded across multiple media, spawning popular web series such as Critical Role and Dimension 20, video games like Baldur’s Gate 3 by Larian Studios, and even a theatrical release with “Honor Among Thieves.”
