Last week, the Xbox Developer Direct brought a delightful surprise with the unveiling of Ninja Gaiden 4, sparking excitement among fans. This announcement showcased an unexpected team-up between Team Ninja, the creators of the original series, and PlatinumGames, renowned for their expertise in spectacle fighters. But that’s not all—Xbox added a cherry on top by dropping a modern remaster of Ninja Gaiden 2 without any prior notice.
Merging two legendary teams from distinct action game genres was no small feat. It took the intervention of Xbox head honcho Phil Spencer to make this collaboration a reality.
During a recent chat with Game Watch, Tea Ninja producer Fumihiko Yasuda opened up about how the studio had been brainstorming for a big Ninja Gaiden comeback but struggled to nail down the details. It wasn’t until they crossed paths with Spencer that the ideas really started to flow. His suggestion was to unite Team Ninja, Koei Tecmo, and PlatinumGames for the next major installment in the Ninja Gaiden franchise.
Even though Koei Tecmo’s president, Hisashi Koinuma, and PlatinumGames’ president, Atsushi Inaba, had toyed with the idea of working together, it was ultimately Spencer who tied everything together.
“We’ve worked on action games ourselves, but as we prepared to relaunch Ninja Gaiden after over a decade, we wanted to collaborate with PlatinumGames, known for incredible action titles like Bayonetta and NieR: Automata,” Yasuda explained, reflecting on how their partnership began.
PlatinumGames is no stranger to breathing new life into franchises from other studios, with titles like Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance and NieR: Automata under their belt. Naturally, there’s high anticipation that Ninja Gaiden 4 will be joining the ranks of the greatest action games of all time. The reveal certainly hit all the right notes to get fans buzzing.
Set to launch this fall, Ninja Gaiden 4 will be making its way to PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
