There’s a new teaser trailer out for the live-action version of How To Train Your Dragon, and if you ask me, those winged lizards seem almost too lifelike.
Universal Pictures gave us our first glimpse of the live-action adaptation last year, and it left me with one burning question: why even make this? Now, with the release of the latest teaser this weekend, I’m still scratching my head. Honestly, the new teaser doesn’t reveal much more than the previous one, but it sure does pack in a lot more dragons. And that leads me to yet another question: what’s going on with Toothless’s look? Our beloved dragon hero looks like his animated self, just with a touch of realistic texture. But the other dragons? They’re shockingly lifelike.
It’s important to remember that dragons aren’t real (sorry if that’s news to you), so there’s a limit to how realistic they can appear. While some of the designs do retain a hint of that cartoonish charm, a lot of them could easily pass in a more serious dragon-themed flick without causing you to think twice. Toothless, on the other hand, comes across a bit more comical than usual—especially given that the original movie showcases a bunch of dragons, all with designs that are equally, if not more, stylized and whimsical compared to Toothless.
Still, there’s no turning back now! Luckily, we have Dean DeBlois, the director of the original animated film, returning for this project, and Gerard Butler is stepping back into the role of Stoick the Vast. So, at least we can hope for some level of continuity, even if the dragons look a little different. The countdown is on to see how it all turns out—you’ll have to hang tight until June 13 later this year.
