This week marks an exciting venture for VR enthusiasts as Combat Waffle Studios, in collaboration with Beyond Frames Entertainment, rolls out a new game into early access. Both studios previously made waves with their VR survival shooter, Ghosts of Tabor (2023), and they’re now set to launch a game that draws heavy inspiration from the acclaimed Rust (2018).
Developed by Spoonfed Interactive with a helping hand from Combat Waffle, GRIM is poised to deliver a robust Rust-like multiplayer survival experience to PC VR and Quest platforms, kicking off this month.
In the spirit of Rust, Grim centers around crafting and scavenging, with a unique twist: everything unfolds on a resource-depleted Mars, riddled with remnants of failed colonization attempts. Gamers can dive into the first playable version on SteamVR headsets and Quest from Thursday, January 16th onwards.
Stranded on Mars in Grim, players will encounter extreme weather conditions and find numerous deserted outposts ripe for looting. Managing health is crucial, as you need to keep tabs on hunger, hydration, and oxygen levels. Interestingly, any buildings you construct remain in place within the game’s persistent environment—at least until the server undergoes its regular weekly reset.
Beyond Frames Entertainment, who also took the reins on publishing Ghosts of Tabor, is back to publish Grim as well. They teamed up with Combat Waffle Studios to provide ongoing support and advice to Spoonfed Interactive, a solo development operation.
The studios emphasize that Grim’s Early Access Alpha marks “the beginning of a collaborative development journey,” echoing the launch approach used for Ghosts of Tabor. They encourage early adopters to actively provide feedback to influence the game’s mechanics, features, and overall direction.
Starting January 16th, players using Quest and SteamVR can get their hands on Grim in Early Access Alpha for $20.
