Rec Room has become a go-to venue for enjoying unique social gaming experiences, offering a range of first-party adventures perfect for teaming up with buddies or jumping in with random players. Their latest venture, ‘Run the Block,’ has now entered the scene, drawing heavy inspiration from the beloved Dreamcast classic Jet Set Radio.
Debuting on December 11th, ‘Run the Block’ has already caught the attention of over a million players. This free multiplayer mini-game thrusts you into high-speed competition with up to nine others. You’ll be dashing and parkouring your way through a sprawling urban landscape.
Although it lacks the iconic rollerblades that Jet Set Radio was famous for, you’ll still get your fill of excitement by sprinting, jumping, and mastering grinds along massive rails that interlace the map. Plus, you can leave your mark by tagging graffiti in the vibrant cityscape.
Over the past year, Rec Room has been more selective with its first-party game releases, compared to previous years. Their standout game before this was the pet farming simulation ‘My Little Monster.’
In 2023, the focus has been on enriching the platform with branded content, including avatar packs from ‘Monster High’ and elements from Bungie’s shooter, Destiny. Another major push has been enhancing their creator suite, letting users craft intricate worlds and sell their own assets in the game’s creator economy. Earlier this year, they also introduced full-body avatars, giving players more ways to personalize their in-game presence.
This development follows Rec Room’s recent debut on the Nintendo Switch in November, broadening its accessibility. It is now available on a variety of platforms such as PC VR, all Quest devices, the original PSVR, iOS, Android, Pico, Xbox, and PlayStation.
