About a year ago, I embarked on the journey of writing 3rd Party 64 episodes, focusing on various Army Men games released for the Nintendo 64. It was around this period that The Video Game History Foundation shared a festive commercial for “Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes,” one of the titles I was covering.
In the midst of this, I started a conversation with Frank Cifaldi, the director of the Video Game History Foundation, which led us down an unexpected path. They had recently acquired a collection from developer Michael Mendheim, the creative mind behind the Sarge’s Heroes series. By the end of our discussions, my inbox was bursting with documents related to the development of the Army Men series, significantly expanding the scope of my project. Fast forward to late summer 2024, and Frank offered me a chance to appear on an episode of The Video Game History Hour. This was an opportunity to discuss the games further with Mendheim himself, providing even deeper insights.
In this episode of 3rd Party 64, I include clips from that enlightening interview, along with research derived from the documents provided by The Video Game History Foundation. Without their invaluable contributions, it’s unlikely I could have explored these games in such depth.
And there’s even more to share!
As I delved deeper into my research, I realized there was too much fascinating information about Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes to fit into the original video. So, we branched out into a second video to highlight what I believe were the nine most intriguing, previously undocumented facts from my research. You can catch this video on The Video Game History Foundation’s YouTube channel.
