On Tuesday, G.Skill rolled out its new ultra-low-latency DDR5-6400 memory modules, which boast a CAS latency of just 30 clocks. These modules mark a significant leap forward, offering the fastest timings we’ve seen for DDR5-6400 sticks and are compatible with both AMD and Intel CPU systems.
Every DDR memory generation promises higher data transfer rates and usually longer relative latencies. While many applications benefit from increased bandwidth, some really take advantage of lower latencies. However, reducing latencies can be a tougher challenge than boosting transfer rates, making low-latency options a rare find.
Yet, G.Skill seems to have cracked the code by selecting high-quality DDR5 memory chips and designing tailor-made printed circuit boards. The result? DDR5-6400 modules with CL30 timings, significantly better than the JEDEC-recommended CL46 for this speed. In terms of pure numbers, while JEDEC modules have an absolute latency of 14.375 ns, G.Skill’s innovation slashes that down to just 9.375 ns—a 35% decrease.
Each DDR5-6400 CL30 39-39-102 module is 16 GB, and they’ll be sold in 32 GB dual-channel kits. However, details on voltage settings haven’t been disclosed, though it’s safe to assume they might be above the JEDEC standard.
These modules will cater to both AMD and Intel audiences, with versions for AMD systems featuring EXPO profiles (Trident Z5 Neo RGB and Trident Z5 Royal Neo) and Intel setups boasting XMP 3.0 profiles (Trident Z5 RGB and Trident Z5 Royal). Particularly for AMD’s AM5 systems, which cap out at 6000 MT/s to 6400 MT/s, these new modules will shine, especially when paired with Ryzen 7000 and Ryzen 9000-series CPUs.
It’s worth noting that because these modules don’t conform to standard specs, they won’t be compatible with every system and require high-end motherboards and well-cooled CPUs to function properly.
G.Skill plans to launch these cutting-edge memory kits globally through their partners starting in late August 2024. While the pricing remains under wraps, given their premium specs and niche positioning, they’re expected to carry a premium price tag as well.
