Survivor’s Last-Gen Version: First Impressions

Last summer, Electronic Arts (EA) stirred excitement by announcing that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was making its way to last-gen consoles, after initially being designated as an exclusive for the current-gen. With just days left before its September 17 release on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Respawn and EA have unveiled some intriguing details and new gameplay clips.

Back in 2023, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor launched on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. As a follow-up to the 2019 hit Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, it brought players back into the heart of the battle against the Empire through the eyes of former Jedi Cal Kestis and his band of allies. Survivor was widely acclaimed, bagging multiple awards and commendations. Now, gamers can finally catch a glimpse of how this sequel performs on the PlayStation 4 Pro.

EA has shared a tantalizing five-minute gameplay video of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor running on the PS4 Pro. In this clip, viewers are treated to various moments that showcase combat and exploration. Surprisingly, the visuals and performance on this last-gen port appear fairly impressive given the hardware constraints.

The task of adapting the game for older consoles like the PS4 Pro was not without its challenges, and it naturally comes with some limitations compared to the more advanced current-gen versions. The most significant trade-off seems to be in terms of framerate. As detailed by Respawn, the PS4, PS4 Pro, Xbox One, and Xbox One X versions operate at 30FPS, lacking an option for 60FPS gameplay.

Here are the specific performance goals for each platform, as outlined by EA and Respawn:

• PS4 Pro: 1080p at 30FPS
• Xbox One X: 1440p at 30FPS
• PS4: 900p at 30FPS
• Xbox One: 720p at 30FPS

Given the age of these consoles, these specs are understandable. However, I’d advise against opting for the Xbox One version, since the game is visually stunning even at 1080p, and enduring it at 720p/30FPS would not do justice to such an epic Star Wars saga.
