Heads up: Big spoilers for Final Fantasy VII ahead!
Recently, the Nintendo Switch version of the iconic PS1-era RPG, Final Fantasy VII, got an update that changes how you can capture those memorable scenes.
If you’re playing on the Switch, you can hit the capture button on your controller to snag screenshots or even record 30-second video clips. These can be saved and shared on social media or directly to your mobile devices.
Now, some games don’t play nice with this feature. For example, Xenoblade Chronicles 2 doesn’t allow video capture at all, and Persona 5 Royal restricts both screenshots and video during key story moments.
Final Fantasy VII used to be in that camp. There’s a certain emotional moment about halfway through the game that, let’s be honest, has become legendary: Aerith’s demise. This pivotal scene, where Sephiroth strikes down the beloved flower girl, sets the stage for Disc 2, as Cloud and his team push ahead, grappling with their loss.
Previously, you couldn’t capture any part of this scene or the end of Disc 1 on the Switch. But thanks to update version 1.03, those restrictions are history.
The same capture restrictions were also in place on other platforms, but they’ve now been lifted across the board.
Why the change? It might have something to do with the recent release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth earlier this year, but there’s been little official word on the specifics.
