In contrast to what happened with Final Fantasy 7 Remake, the sequel, Rebirth, is not set to receive any DLC. This isn’t because director Naoki Hamaguchi is outright opposed to the idea, however.
After the launch of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, fans were left questioning whether downloadable content might soon follow, especially given the Remake had its own DLC releases during the gap between the games. Addressing this curiosity in an interview with the Daily Star, Hamaguchi explained the decision. “We absolutely hear the requests from fans, the calls for some DLC,” Hamaguchi acknowledged. “I completely get it, but from my point of view, it seems the fans are more eager to see the third installment of the series as soon as possible.”
He continued, “That’s why we’ve made the call to channel our development resources toward advancing the next game rather than creating extra episode content at this time. We’re dedicating all our energy towards delivering the third game swiftly. That’s our current priority.” Honestly, that sounds like a pretty reasonable approach!
To some extent, the Yuffie DLC for Remake acted as a bridge between the games. Characters like Cid and Vincent Valentine could potentially get their own spotlight episodes in Rebirth. But quite frankly, it’s hard to predict how that might pan out. Plus, with Vincent, there’s always the chance Square Enix could be thinking of remastering Dirge of Cerberus, much like they did with Crisis Core: Reunion. Here’s hoping for the fans of Dirge!
Our own Dom also caught up with Hamaguchi earlier this week, delving into his plans regarding mini-games for the third and final part. Don’t fret, changes are indeed coming, according to the director.
